Confirmation

The Sacrament of Confirmation

A Sacrament of Initiation

The Sacrament of Confirmation is a vital step in the Christian journey, strengthening the grace received at Baptism and sealing the recipient with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Through Confirmation, Catholics are more deeply united with Christ, enriched with spiritual strength, and called to be active witnesses of faith in the world.

Who Can Receive Confirmation?

Baptized Catholics who have reached the appropriate age (varies by diocese) and have received proper formation are eligible. Candidates typically undergo a period of preparation, including catechesis, prayer, and service.

The Rite of Confirmation

During the ceremony, the bishop (or a designated priest) anoints the candidate with sacred chrism oil, laying hands on them while saying: "Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit." This sacrament imparts a deeper outpouring of the Holy Spirit, strengthening the individual for their mission as a disciple of Christ.

Why is Confirmation Important?

  • Deepens baptismal grace
  • Strengthens our bond with the Church
  • Equips us to live and defend our faith boldly
  • Bestows the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit (Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, and Fear of the Lord)
