First Holy Communion
The Sacrament of First Holy Communion
A Sacrament of Initiation
First Holy Communion is a joyful and sacred milestone in a Catholic’s faith journey. It is the first time a baptized Catholic receives the Eucharist, the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, deepening their relationship with Him and the Church.
Who Can Receive First Holy Communion?
Children typically receive their First Communion around the age of reason (about seven years old) after proper preparation, which includes learning about the Eucharist, participating in First Reconciliation (Confession), and growing in their understanding of the Catholic faith. Adults entering the Church through OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation for Adults) also receive First Communion after their preparation..
The Importance of the Eucharist
- The Eucharist is the "source and summit" of the Christian life. In receiving Holy Communion, we:
- Welcome Jesus into our hearts in a profound way
- Are spiritually nourished and strengthened
- Deepen our unity with Christ and His Church
- Are called to live out His love in the world
Preparation for First Communion
Preparation typically involves:
- Weekly Faith Formation classes and/or Sacramental Preparation sessions
- Learning about the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist
- Receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation before First Communion
- Participation in Mass and prayer as a family
